The Helicopter Birthday!

We had a birthday boy the beginning of this month, who at the last minute requested a helicopter cake instead of a fire engine. Easy enough! It cut my work in half. We didn't exactly go all out like last year, as this year things were a little crazier around birthday time. When I went to decorate the cake the morning of the "party" I discovered all I had in the cupboard was green or yellow food coloring, and no time to run out to the store. I obviously hadn't thought much about his birthday ahead of time or I would have had some red too.  But I'm afraid I had used it all up in the Sunday School lesson two days before. ( Moses turning the water into blood) :D  So that is how we ended up with a yellow helicopter instead of a red fire truck (which I was rather unprepared to make anyway). He says he wants the fire engine next year...but that is subject to change. :)
Here is the method we used to make a helicopter cake. Super easy! Most of it I did the night before.
I used the scraps of sugar sheets that I had left from last year for the windows. Glued together all the accessories, baked the cake, cut to desired shape and threw it in the freezer the night before. The tail is a fat popsicle stick covered with cardstock. Propellers are straws embellished with cardstock.  Small wooden dowels cut to size with cardstock landing gear glued onto the cardboard platform finished up the props. Everything was stuff I keep on hand in the craft cupboard.
Next day when it was finally Aubreys naptime I pulled out my frozen cakes and "frosted" them with melted chocolate for a quick and easy cake. Made with a round pie plate and a square 8x8 that I whacked up a little to add to the giant cupcake baked for the main body of the helicopter. I poked the wooden dowels into the landing pad for a nice sturdy base to set the helicopter on once we arrived at the party destination. In hindsight I would put a dab of chocolate on it to glue the helicopter to it so it wouldn't topple off. But I didn't have room for the whole stack in my freezer and didn't have any melted chocolate once we arrived on scene, so it did get knocked off its perch at one point. No harm done tho thanks to its hardened chocolate shell.

Plunk the helicopter on the frame and Ta Da!

Somehow my little man went from this
 to this
 to this
 to this

 to this
In just the blink of an eye!

Mr. Wise Guy and the kids rode their bikes to the party and The Boy settled into his seat of honor immediately. :)
Waiting patiently for all the ladies  to arrive...
and get this party started!!!

Cake time was immediately set into motion.
That smile means it was a success.
The most special part of THIS birthday was that for the first time in 4 years he got to share it with his neighboring cousin who is only a few days apart from him. This was a huge milestone. :D

Half way!

In our family it used to be that these 2 were the big kids...
And this one was the little kid.
 The Baby. :)
But Guess what?!?!
Now these 3 are the big kids...
Because our family is expanding!
Half-way day landed on my birthday!
That means #4 is starting to make its presence known to the world in the form of a large bump stickin out in front.
Kate informed me the other day that the baby must be growing because I was getting fat! Elliott promptly responded with an inspection of my tummy and the declaration that, "it WASN'T fat  it was FLAT!" :D The boy already knows what not to say to a woman. :)

May they always love each other this much! :)

A quick summary of the last month or two...

Well, many events have happened since I last was around here. ;) One of which is that we rarely have internet service these days...hence the lack of posting. I got a new camera for my birthday so shouldn't have lack of posting material! For starters I picked 70lbs of strawberries and the kids enjoyed helping to put them up in the freezer ...make a lot of jam... and of course, eat as many as possible!!!

Two are better than one

After that I landed myself in the hospital for 6 hrs. with preterm labor at 29wks. and was put on "bed rest as much as possible". It happened to be the same week I lost my Dr. which only complicated things. :)
Help came for the following week.

We spent a week after that at Boppa and Gramma Jo's house.
Then A. Susie came and stayed a couple of weeks with us...which enable us to make it to Aberdeen Conf. as planned. While she was here my B-day came along.
Actually she stayed an extra day so she could be here on my B-day. What a sweet sister. She fixed bran muffins and smoothies for my breakfast and cleaned my entire house before starting out on her long trip home. We all got a candle in our muffin and I got a lovely birthday serenade. :)

We missed her terribly after she left. (especially Miss Kate!)

As I mentioned previously I received a new camera for my birthday. What I didn't mention was the "smile detection" feature. :D We had a lot of fun with it and it came in handy for the last maternity self portrait (coming up).
Enjoy our cheesy smiles! :)

In other news, we finally got the hot weather thats been hiding from us for so long this year, so the kids have been enjoying the pool.

I have made it to 36 weeks and have permission from the Dr. to do whatever i want now. ;)
This last week the baby has been bruising my ribs and I've plumb run outta room to store any more baby!
This Little Monkey turned 2 today!
We actually celebrated his birthday on Sat. though. I managed to scratch up a simple "big truck" cake, since he loves big trucks, in spite of a busy weekend. A yummy chocolate zuchinnii cake since that is the only kind he likes.
At least HE thought it was pretty cool. :)

And now its time to say Good night! Miss Kate has a bedtime story for ya! :)
Don't know when I'll be back with our sketchy internet service right now....So enjoy this one, til next time... :)
